Localized chronic iron deposition within non-reperfused myocardial infarctions

چکیده
Background Chronic iron deposition is known to occur within reperfused hemorrhagic myocardial infarctions (MIs), and could be a source of prolonged inflammatory activity within MI territories. However, whether the stagnant blood downstream to the permanent occlusion (i.e. in territories of non-reperfused MI) could lead to chronic iron deposition is unknown. In this study, using a controlled canine model, we investigated whether chronic iron deposition could occur in non-reperfused MIs using T2* CMR and validated our findings with standard histological methods.

Chronic manifestation of postreperfusion intramyocardial hemorrhage as regional iron deposition: a cardiovascular magnetic resonance study with ex vivo validation.
BACKGROUND Intramyocardial hemorrhage frequently accompanies large reperfused myocardial infarctions. However, its influence on the makeup and the ensuing effect on the infarcted tissue during the chronic phase remain unexplored. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients (n=15; 3 women), recruited after successful percutaneous coronary intervention for first segment-elevation myocardial infarction, underw...
متن کاملMR evaluation of brain iron in children with cerebral infarction.
Young children and infants normally have essentially no detectable brain iron. We evaluated brain iron patterns on 23 MR scans in 20 patients under 6 years of age with clinical and MR-documented cerebral infarctions in an attempt to further understand the neuropathologic phenomenon of increased iron deposition, which has been observed in other disease states. MR was performed at 1.5 T with spin...
متن کاملPersistent Microvascular Obstruction After Myocardial Infarction Culminates in the Confluence of Ferric Iron Oxide Crystals, Proinflammatory Burden, and Adverse Remodeling.
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence indicates that persistent microvascular obstruction (PMO) is more predictive of major adverse cardiovascular events than myocardial infarct (MI) size. But it remains unclear how PMO, a phenomenon limited to the acute/subacute period of MI, drives adverse remodeling in chronic MI setting. We hypothesized that PMO resolves into chronic iron crystals within MI territor...
متن کاملThe MRI characteristics of the no-flow region are similar in reperfused and non-reperfused myocardial infarcts: an MRI and histopathology study in swine
Background: The no-flow region (NF) visualised by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in myocardial infarction (MI) has been explained as the product of reperfusion-injury-induced microvascular obstruction. However, a similar MRI phenomenon occurs in non-reperfused MI. Accordingly, our purpose was to compare the MRI and histopathologic characteristics of the NF in reperfused and non-reperfused MIs...
متن کاملIron Deposition following Chronic Myocardial Infarction as a Substrate for Cardiac Electrical Anomalies: Initial Findings in a Canine Model
PURPOSE Iron deposition has been shown to occur following myocardial infarction (MI). We investigated whether such focal iron deposition within chronic MI lead to electrical anomalies. METHODS Two groups of dogs (ex-vivo (n = 12) and in-vivo (n = 10)) were studied at 16 weeks post MI. Hearts of animals from ex-vivo group were explanted and sectioned into infarcted and non-infarcted segments. ...
